Staff have been working on our action plan for Truth and Reconciliation and have developed a school wide, year long inquiry project to delve deeper into the meaning of our Land Acknowledgment. While students love to present and recite the words, developing a deeper understanding of the history and meaning behind the words takes intentional work.

A land acknowledgement is more than words we say; it is an invitation to learn about the land, the peoples, histories, relationships and responsibilities represented by those words. Students will investigate selected words and phrases from the Calgary Board of Education's land acknowledgement, as is developmentally appropriate and curriculum-connected in English Language Arts and Literature and / or Social Studies.

The inquiry will culminate in a Whole-School Land Acknowledgement Learning Wall, and a sharing event in which each grade contributes a different layer of understanding.

In recognition of National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, and in alignment with the CBE Education Plan, Scenic Acres School acknowledges and supports the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada’s (TRC) Calls to Action, and makes the following commitment to action for the 2026-2027 school year:

We will unpack our Land Acknowledgement through a whole-school inquiry into Language, Place, Treaty, and Reconciliation. Students will showcase their learning through a collaborative installation and community sharing event.

Together, we walk the path of reconciliation with courage & care.

Students are invited to wear an orange shirt on Tuesday September 29. There is no school on Wednesday September 30 in recognition of the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.
